What are the different manufacturing processes used in bolts factories?

What is a Bolt?

A bolt is a type of threaded fastener consisting of an external male thread designed to fit into a pre-formed matching female thread. They can be interchangeably used in place of screws and nuts as well.

How do they Work?

Owing to the growing advancements in information technology and rapid industrialization, nuts and bolts are being commonly used in manufacturing units as industrial fasteners. These are used in the assembly of different machines and related tools. By default, nuts and bolts are designed with holes where other threaded bolts are connected to fasten a machine or various tools. Some types of bolts contain external threads that can only be combined with internally threaded nuts.

The bolts and nuts have numerous applications, and they are used in all types of products ranging from electronics, domestic appliances, furniture to automobiles, manufacturing machines, and so much more. Besides the latter listed industries, fasteners like bolts are also used in metal manufacturing factories, where different equipment is assembled using these fasteners. In short, these small metallic pieces have a vast number of uses that are hard to pin down.

How are Bolts Made?

Although bolts exist in different sizes and shapes as per the requirement of the application, the production process is roughly the same. Various bolt production processes are being used by factories worldwide, but a typical process is always an option. The conventional method to make bolts can be narrowed down to a few basic steps. In the first step, a steel wire is molded into the required shape.

In the second step, the wire is treated with extreme heat to solidify the shape and increase strength. The latter step also ensures a smooth surface treatment which directly improves its fastening capacity. After this, bolts are packed and shipped to relevant addresses. As far as the complex types of bolts are concerned, which require a high level of precision and attention, they are made using different processes.

Below, we will discuss three main production processes used by bolt factories to cater to the needs of a wider clientele.

 

  1. Similar to the process mentioned earlier, this type of process begins with cold forging. A large and thick metallic wire is cut according to the specified measurements corresponding to the design of bolts. Then, special tools are used to mold the wire into the desired bolt shape. The wire is treated with high pressure and normal temperature during the initial phase to make a series of molds. New bolts are heated at extreme temperatures once the design meets required precision demands to solidify the design.
  1. Then there is some manufacturing process that uses extreme heat to make the bolts. Such bolts withstand rough quality tests because they are installed in necessary machinery where there is no space for malfunctioning. For instance, thread processing. It is also a commonly used process by factories where extreme temperatures are used to harden steel. During this process, a soft bolt is engraved with drawings of different threads to ensure the fastening. Once the engravings are created, it is moved for further heating to solidify the steel.
